-NUG-

 

NUG - the experimental animation is based on the illustrated novel with the same name that was created free  after the novel from Hermann Hesse, Narziss and Goldmund.

Besides the abstraction of the figures, the space and the time important is their transformation.

By the abstraction of the exterior , the depiction of the interior of the persons is possible and becomes a central theme.

-FORMA URBIS ZMCM​-​

In his drawings and illustrated novels (comics) Thorsten Englert is looking for new paths to describe the stories in a very abstract way. The importance in his work are the things as they are behind their  visible appearance. Every line and symbol, in the same time, can be part of a thought, a face , a building or the landscape in which happens the scene.

 

In his comic "NUG" in 1996, which is an illustration of the novel "Narcissus and Goldmund" by Hermann Hesse, he shows what happens to the two main characters in the story, and interprets each scene in a new way. Together with the composer Dulce Aguirre they realized an animation of this story. In his comic "K1" from 1998 he tells a criminal story about a schizophrenic detective, in which the hunt of a criminal case develops to the search for his own being.

 

In his latest series of drawings about Mexico City, focuses on the processes in the neighborhoods  and how people create their own surrounding. Fo example in the drawing on the "Paseo de la Reforma" is to see how the new skyscrapers blend with the Colonia Juarez that is behind those and by that it shows their influence over the area. In the drawing "Tepic" are shown different histories and processes that coexist together in a a very small space, creating the phenomene Tepic.

-FORMA URBIS ANGANGUEO-

 

In the series of drawings about Angangueo, references to different elements of abstraction prehispanic drawings of the region can be found. Fragmentation in the representation of the city, houses, lots and mountains and especially its characteristic ceilings continue in the representation of the facades. The tower of the main church is mixed with the landscape behind and the typical elements of Angangueo, found on the walls in an additive-subtractive way elements of the work of the miners.

The work " The new house and the old sea" or " Fishing in the future", is the first threedimensional illustrated novel of the artist. It shows the structure of a house thats gives the basis for the history . In symbiosis, the house describes the story, as the story explains the house. The way in which the story is told is through the main character; imagining some children in the house, that where just hearing of that story and are playing with things they are finding all over the building: in that way the bedroom becomes the fisherman's dream of the great fish. In the living room and the gym, the struggle between man and fish bows, till the big fish ends on the too small dinner table; in the kitchen and the small boat and the fish  becomes a tank ship of packed food and enters into a video game, in a battle against the sharks, which happens in the chambers of children; after losing the second match, the fisherman arrives home, only the bones of his prey but the villagers worship him and declare him as a hero ; with this reputation and new courage, he can come back with the help of the little boy emerging from the pool.

 

 

The projection of the NUG animation about the story "Narcissus and Goldmund" by Hermann Hesse outlines the premise of the artist to tel the story in an abstract way. In approve of the new posibilities of the animation movie in addition to the possibilities of the illustrated novel scenes and sequences, ofr example the struggle between Goldmund and the tramp on the transforms into a slot machine.
